How to Fix a Lifting Press-On Nail (60-Second Repair Guide)
By Tariq Aziz, founder of Bling Art — designed in Yorkshire since 2014
You notice one nail lifting at the cuticle edge. Tempting to pull it off and lose the manicure. Don’t. Here’s the 60-second repair we recommend to every Bling Art customer.
What you need
- The nail glue from your kit (or any cyanoacrylate nail glue from a UK pharmacy)
- A toothpick or cuticle stick
- A cotton pad and rubbing alcohol (if available)
The 60-second fix
Step 1 — Don’t pull or pry
If the lift is small, leave it alone. Pulling weakens the bond on the rest of the nail.
Step 2 — Clean the gap (5 seconds)
If you have alcohol, dab a tiny bit under the lifted edge to clean off any moisture or skin oils that have crept under.
Step 3 — Apply a drop of glue (10 seconds)
Squeeze a tiny drop of glue — less than you think — onto the toothpick tip. Slide it under the lifted edge of the press-on.
Step 4 — Press firmly (15 seconds)
Press the lifted area down firmly. Count 15 seconds out loud.
Step 5 — Seal the edge (10 seconds)
Run another tiny bead of glue around the entire cuticle line of that nail. This prevents the lift from recurring.
Step 6 — No water for 30 minutes
Hands off water for half an hour. The glue needs to fully cure.
If the lift is bigger than a millimetre
You have two options:
Option A: Pop and re-glue
- Gently lift the press-on off completely
- File any old glue off the back with the included emery board
- Wipe your natural nail with alcohol
- Re-apply with fresh glue, press for 15 seconds, seal edges
Option B: Replace with a spare
If the press-on is damaged, take a fresh nail from your spare set (if you have one) and apply.
Why nails lift in the first place
The most common causes:
- You didn’t seal the edges originally
- Water got under the edge within the first hour of application
- You knocked or snagged the nail and didn’t notice
- Hot water exposure (long shower, washing up without gloves)

- Always seal the edges with a bead of glue post-application

FAQs
How do I fix a press-on nail that’s lifting?
Add a tiny drop of glue under the lifted edge with a toothpick, press firmly for 15 seconds, seal around the cuticle line with a fresh bead of glue. Avoid water for 30 minutes.
Can I re-glue a press-on nail that completely fell off?
Yes. Clean any old glue off the back of the press-on with a file, wipe your natural nail with alcohol, apply fresh glue, press for 15 seconds.
Will the repaired nail last as long as the others?
Yes — a properly re-glued nail with sealed edges will last as long as the rest of the set.
Why does the same nail keep lifting?
Usually because the natural nail underneath has more oil/moisture than the others (often the thumb or index finger) or because the press-on size is slightly off. Try alcohol prep + an extra-thick edge seal.
