Introduction

Applying false nails at home can give you a salon-quality manicure without the expense. But if you don't apply them correctly, they can fall off too soon or look unnatural. In this guide, we'll show you how to apply false nails perfectly every time.

This tutorial is by Bling Art, a UK family business based in Bradford. We've been designing press-on false nails since 2013 and the technique below is the one we recommend to every Bling Art customer.

What You'll Need

  • False nails (press-on nails or glue-on nails) — Bling Art sets from £3.99
  • Nail glue or adhesive tabs (included with every Bling Art retail set)
  • Nail file and buffer
  • Cuticle pusher (wooden stick recommended)
  • Rubbing alcohol or alcohol prep wipes

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying False Nails

Step 1: Prepare Your Natural Nails

  • Trim and shape your nails — press-ons sit best on natural nails 1-2mm long
  • Push back your cuticles gently with a wooden stick
  • Lightly buff the surface shine off (one pass each nail) — this is critical for adhesion
  • Wipe each nail with rubbing alcohol to remove oils and dirt
  • Wait 30 seconds for the alcohol to evaporate fully

This step alone doubles wear time. If you've ever had press-ons fall off in a day, skipped prep is usually why.

Step 2: Choose the Right Size

Lay out the false nails before applying any glue. Each press-on should cover your nail bed edge-to-edge with maybe 0.5mm of margin.

  • If two sizes look close, pick the slightly larger one and file it down to match — you can't make a too-small one bigger
  • File the edges if needed for a perfect custom fit

Bling Art retail sets include 24 nails across 12 sizes — most natural nail beds have at least two viable size matches.

Step 3: Apply the Nails

Using Nail Glue (recommended for 7-14 day wear):

  • Apply a small drop of glue to your natural nail (centre, not edge-to-edge)
  • Add a thin smear of glue to the back of the false nail
  • Press and hold for 10-15 seconds with firm pressure

Using Adhesive Tabs (for short-term wear, 2-4 days):

  • Peel the tab from its backing and stick to the false nail
  • Peel the second backing
  • Press the false nail onto your natural nail and hold for 10 seconds

Don't use both glue AND tabs together — the layers interfere and weaken the bond.

Step 4: Shape & Finish

  • File the tips to even out the length if needed
  • Buff any rough edges
  • Apply a clear top coat for extra shine (optional)

Step 5: Cure Period (30 minutes hands-off)

For the first 30 minutes after application:

  • No water on your hands
  • No hand cream or oil
  • No washing dishes, showering, or hand-washing

After 30 minutes you're at 80% bond strength. After 2 hours you're at full strength and can do anything — shower, swim, the lot.

How Long Do False Nails Last?

With proper prep and application:

  • Glue-on nails: 7 to 14 days
  • Adhesive tab nails: 2 to 4 days

For a detailed wear-time breakdown including the five factors that affect how long press-ons last, see our complete wear-time guide.

How to Remove False Nails Safely

Never pull or peel false nails off — that's the single biggest cause of nail damage.

Correct method:

  1. Soak your fingertips in warm soapy water for 10-15 minutes
  2. Gently rock each nail side to side — it should release without force
  3. Buff off any residual glue with a fine buffer
  4. Apply cuticle oil and hand cream to rehydrate

For all five removal methods ranked by speed and gentleness, see our removal guide.
